The Giuseppe Verdi School of Music in Prato, in collaboration with the Camerata strumentale di Prato, has been holding the Davide Lufrano Chaves National Guitar Competition since 2015, in memory of the artist from Prato who died at only 30 years old in 2013. The goal of the competition is to promote new talent in the guitar scene, awarded with a scholarship provided by the Lufrano family.

2025 Edition

The ninth edition will be held at the Verdi Music School in Prato on Saturday 1 March 2025.

Davide Lufrano Chaves (1983-2013) inizia a studiare pianoforte alla Scuola di musica Verdi di Prato a otto anni e in seguito si dedica alla chitarra, rimanendo per molti anni nella classe di Carlo Mascilli Migliorini, con il quale si diploma nel 2005. Gli studi successivi per la chitarra jazz con Gianni Zei e Riccardo Galardini, al Berklee Umbria Jazz e con Juan Lorenzo e Oscar Herrero per la chitarra flamenco, sono orientati dalla passione per generi musicali diversi e descrivono l’ampio orizzonte dei suoi progetti artistici successivi. Già negli anni della Verdi forma un trio sperimentale – Laboratorio del Sogno Lucido – e uno chitarristico – La Fiaba del gatto nero – con i quali si esibisce con successo. Dal 2009, anno in cui si stabilisce nel Regno Unito, si afferma come chitarrista e compositore in alcune importanti band britanniche, suonando con la World Music band The Magic Tombolinos. Nel periodo in cui vive a Londra realizza vari progetti: il duo flamenco-rumba De Fuego, con Edina Balczo; l‘acoustic tango project Tango Porteño, insieme al fisarmonicista Maurizio Pala; con la cantante latin rock Surianne, oltre a
numerose altre collaborazioni. Davide ha suonato in importanti festival a livello mondiale, quali il Festival Sziget e il Festival FT, si è esibito in show televisivi quali il Rob Brydon Show e ha insegnato chitarra alla Royal Academy of London.

Eighth edition of the “Davide Lufrano Chaves” National Guitar Competition.
The winners were awarded a scholarship provided by the Lufrano family. Thanks to the jury, chaired by maestro Carlo Mascilli Migliorini, and to all the competing musicians.
